Education & Professional Development

Leadership Metro Richmond

Graduate, Leadership Quest
Class of 2019

  • Explored the organizational, ethical, financial structures, issues, challenges, and opportunities of nonprofits, local government, advocacy, and education-based systems
  • Facilitated a team research project, sparked by Chris Fullman’s homebuying experience in 2016 after receiving a Jim Crow-era discriminatory housing covenant attached to his property’s deed
  • Reviewed deed records in the Henrico County Courthouse and the Library of Virginia and compiled a list of identified subdivisions containing discriminatory policies; combined subdivision boundary data with identified subdivisions and produced visual examples of the extent of systemic redlining and segregation; currently authoring a visual essay containing this data to be published at MakeBetterDeeds.org

Update: Our research has led to partnering with Virginia Del. Lamont Bagby and pushing for legislation offering new tools to homeowners and buyers to strike such discriminatory language and remove it from their deeds. That legislation, HB788, was unanimously approved by the Virginia House on February 5th, 2020, the Virginia Senate on February 24th, 2020, and was sent to the Governor Northam’s desk on March 11th, 2020. It was signed into law on April 6th, 2020 by Governor Ralph Northam and went into effect on July 1st, 2020! Today in Virginia, any property owner can file a simple form with their local court to detach a racial covenant, on their own, without having to pay any fees or taxes.
